In his never-ending obsession-quest to murder the Man of Steel, Luthor invades the Fortress of Solitude and unleashes monsters on Metropolis. At the fringes of the action is the Justice Gang, comprised of Guy Gardner, Hawk Girl and Mister Terrific. The budding relationship with Lois Lane gets some attention and Jimmy Olsen has a girlfriend!
There is action aplenty here with some spectacular fights, armies clashing and robots…robotting. The effects are brilliant, the cinematography is stunning. The score, which is adapted from John William’s original in Superman: The Motion Picture is spot on. All of the actors are great, especially Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
However, characters are thrown at us with no context. Hawk Girl, Mister Terrific, that guy played by Alan Tudyk, all of them are just there with no background to help us define who they are. Hoult is cartoonishly malevolent as Luthor, but why is he so evil? The Green Lantern gets more coloring than most of the others, but even Clark is thinly drawn. This movie has very little heart.
I’ll give this a mild recommendation. I did not see it in 3D, but I can see how that might enhance your viewing pleasure. This should be OK for kids. There are a couple of useless post credits scenes, you can skip them without missing anything.
