As his life becomes as disfigured as his face, he seeks an unconventional remedy from a medical researcher. The cure works, better than anyone expected.
Revenge can be fun.
As a horror movie, this works pretty well, with moments of terror and just a few, but effective jump-scares to keep you on your toes. Gotham City is as dark and brooding outside as it should be and the cinematography is sharp and not gaudy. The soundtrack and score keep the pace up nicely.
However, it starts very slowly and without really planting any kind of empathy for the leads. As a revenge flick, I would want to root more for the protagonist, but he’s just sort of rolling along, not really acting as a force for good or evil. And the doctor is rather blandly oblivious to the consequences of her conduct. I thought the best character was Cadillac Sal (Corey Johnson), even when he wasn’t. Even the mobster is a bit bland.
I’ll recommend this one, but not for the kiddies. Date movie? Sure, if your date is into gore and terror. There are no extra scenes after the credits roll, so you can flee once they start.
