The two have to struggle against nature and their own base impulses in order to survive, as it becomes increasingly clear that they might never be rescued.
I went in thinking this was a comedy and boy was I wrong. As a horror movie, this works well, especially when who the monster really is becomes clear. McAdams is brilliant as the new woman in charge, discovering her inner strengths. O’Brien has to play against this and hold his end up. The scenery and cinematography are stunning and the score is perfect. There are plenty of moments of heart-faltering tension and true terror to keep you balancing on the brink of your seat.
Raimi still knows how to do jump-scares better than anyone.
However, the tone of this movie bothered me a bit; it smelled of stale misandry as the obviously more competent than any of the douchebag men around her comes into her ascendancy over them. This hackneyed plotting doesn’t really allow for much character growth, but maybe it’s not necessary for a horror movie. Also, everyone’s backstory is a bit heavy-handed; “setup” doesn’t even begin to describe it.
I’ll recommend this one, although I’m not sure it would be a great date movie, and you really don’t want to take the kids to see it. There are no scenes after the credits start, so feel free to help yourself out.
