Avengers: Endgame

Written by: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely

Directed by: Anthony and Joe Russo

Starring: No way, just look here

Rated PG-13
Running time: 181 Mins (!)

Five years after losing to Thanos, with the Earth still recovering from half of its population going up in dust, the Avengers start looking for a way to reset the universe.

There is some grand spectacle here, with laughs and tears and action aplenty. All of the actors give topnotch performances, the special effects are superb and everyone is having the time of their lives.

So why am I disappointed?

First, there were some characterization choices I just could not get behind. I’m not going to spoil anything, but you will know when you see them. Secondly, killing someone for the sake of pathos, rather then it serving the story, always annoys me; you will know that when you see it, too. And finally, the movie was too freaking long. It absolutely sagged in spots, and went off in tangents it didn’t really need. The running time was a poor monetary decision, as it means fewer showings and, no doubt, fewer repeat viewings. I know I’m not sitting through that again.

I know you’ll go see it anyway, but that’s my take. I did not see it in 3-D; I doubt it would have helped. But take heart — there are no extra scenes after the credits roll, so feel free to assemble outside, once they start. I sacrificed my bladder, so you wouldn’t have to.
