Review: The Wolverine

Review 2013 by RD Clark

Title

The Wolverine

Written by: Mark Bomback, Scott Frank

Directed by: James Mangold

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, Famke Janssen, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada and a bunch of others whose names I cannot pronounce.

Rated PG-13
Running time: 126 mins

After the events of X3, Logan is living in a cave and having terrible dreams. Answering a call from an old acquaintance, he travels to Japan and ends up involved in politics, which in Japan, apparently means kidnaping, lots of shooting, chopping of limbs and arrows flying everywhere.

This was just what I was looking for on a Friday night; much better than the first Wolverine movie, which really failed because it tried to do too much. This one stays on story and, although the surprise ending is not that much of a surprise, it did manage to finish the story logically. I really liked Viper (Khodchenkova) and Yukio (Rila Fukushima); I thought that Mariko’s character (Okamoto) was a little bland and helpless.

I’ll give this a hearty recommendation, although this does push the PG-13 envelope quite a bit; it is very violent. There is a mid-credits scene that mustn’t be missed, but nothing after that.

Flytrap rating: 7.5/10
