When he fails to retrieve a hard drive with critical information on it, Bond lays low for a while, drinking, carousing and generally wasting away. After someone blows up MI6, he comes back to duty, but is he prepared?

This is a good, solid Bond film. I wasn’t as blown away by it as a lot of folks seem to be; Goldfinger remains my pick as the best. Daniel Craig was a bit more introspective in this round, which he pulls off well, and he is on his way to being one of the best Bonds ever. We get a great Bond Lady in Naomie Harris and a rather standard one from Bérénice Marlohe. Judi Dench is, as always, a stolid and wry M. I was not that impressed by this Bond villain, who was more of a cliche’ than a menace; not so much a threat as an in-joke. The idea of making Q a teen-ager (almost) didn’t really work for me. But the chases were thrilling, the fights were brutal and the explosions were glorious and after all, that’s why we go to see Bond movies, isn’t it?

I’ll recommend this one. Leave the very young kids with the baby-sitter, but the teens should be fine. There are no post-credit scenes, so you can get out quickly.

Flytrap rating: 7.5 /10
